Celebrate Spring and Happiness – starting March 20

The first day of Spring this year is also the International Day of Happiness.

It’s about celebrating new life, growth, thriving and the benefits of flourishing in life and relationships. A life well lived.  Wholehearted Wellbeing. The good life.

Happiness Matters

The General Assembly of the United Nations commissioned a Day of Happiness, to raise awareness that happiness, human flourishing and wellbeing are fundamental.  We are invited to support everyone’s ability to achieve this through all spheres of life.

Flourishing people tend to be happier, healthier and smarter.

They are more grateful, generous, creative, productive and open minded.

They develop good character that guides great actions.

Join in cultivating conditions to flourish as a daily priority in your life, your community, your city and your country.

It doesn’t take much to be a ‘joy spreader’ – to join the ‘happiness movement’.

The small and simple things can have a great impact.

Smile. Laugh. Pray. Give a hug. Give from the heart. Give back. Flow forward. Listen. Share a kind word. Say thank you. Lend a helping hand. Be a friend. Offer hospitality.

Your gestures of goodness, kindness and happiness will spread like a contagion.

We need the beauty of goodness and joy

to protest and balance against the brokenness and suffering in the world.

Create a ripple effect of reciprocal acts of gratitude, love, joy, goodness, kindness.

The correlation between happiness and healthiness, longevity, productivity and strong personal relationships is common sense. And is now verified by substantial research reported and expounded in many books, websites like  Authentic Happiness and Live Happy magazine. www.livehappy.com

What is your definition of ‘the good and beautiful life’ – of ‘happiness’?

Everyone in every culture has a different concept of happiness.

Flourishing. Growth. Wellbeing. A life well lived. Contentment. A complete life.

The causes and triggers of short-term happiness may differ, but research is verifying that what sustains long-term happiness – joy, wellbeing, contentment – whatever you choose to call it – seems to be universal to all cultures. God created us this way.

About 40% of your own level of happiness is entirely within your own control.

How you can flourish in life and relationships

Life will have challenges and difficulties. There is a time and season for everything. And there are qualities, skills and traits you can learn and keep growing and thriving.

Positive Emotion

Open your life to Positive Spiritual Emotions. Love Joy Peace Gratitude.

Have Hope and optimism for the future. Grow in your Faith in God.

Be aware of and ‘think’ about the good and beautiful in life – to ‘feel’ better.

Savor each meaningful, wonderful experience. Count your blessings all day long.

Be careful about the story you tell yourself. Get your story straight with God’s reality.

But the Godly are happy;

they rejoice before God and are overcome with joy.    Psalm 68:3 NET

Positive Relationships

Develop wonderful, rich social connections. Family, friends, even strangers.

Feel emotionally connected in deeper, healthy, positive relationships.

Just ‘be there’.  Relationship connections help you be happier, less stressed.

Be around joyful, positive people who you have a ‘heart’ connection with.

Happiness is love. Full stop. George E. Vaillant

Meaning. Fulfillment. Purpose

Grow and develop into the best person God created you to be.

Practice Religious faith and Spirituality. Live Wholehearted before God.

God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself,

because it is not there. There is no such thing.     C.S. Lewis

Belong to and serve something much bigger than yourself.

Live out your passions and goals for a sense of higher meaning, purpose.

Care about the greater good for all mankind and creation.

Offer altruism and help others (which actually also helps you).

Experience as sense of accomplishment and competence in life, and work.

A life devoted to things is a dead life, a stump;

a God-shaped life is a flourishing tree.     Proverbs 11:28 MSG

Engage in life and work

Use your greatest character strengths, gifts, talents to benefit others

Get in the ‘Flow’ – be fully caught up in what you enjoy doing

When people look back on life, they often say:

I wish I let myself be happier

I wish I had courage to be true to myself – live as my truest self

I wish I had spent more time with my friends and family

So – make happiness a priority today !

Manage and Perceive Stress For Growth

View stressors as challenges, opportunity for growth and a deeper meaningful life.

Tell your brain what to think and what to believe.

Practice healthy habits of the mind. Avoid catastrophic thinking.

Be grateful and appreciate the good and beautiful in and around your life.

Practice tranquility for a calming relaxation response.

Pray. Meditate. Breathe deeply.

Learn to surrender.  Watch this music video on the many ways to – Let It Go

When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.   Helen Keller

Like gratitude on Thanksgiving Day, celebrate happiness for a day.

Then choose to FLOURISH as a lifestyle.
